Orphans to get a new home

Destitute and orphaned children in Verulam and surrounding areas will now have a new village to live in. The Lungisa Indlela is community project aimed at helping abandoned children who have now where else to go.

Tich Smith, one of the leaders of the project, said tht intention of the project is to maintain a good relationship with the community.

Multi media centre to help Waterloo community

The new Waterloo Primary School Media Centre has received rave reviews since its opening last year.

The centre is aimed at promoting access to quality education to previously disadvantaged children. The centre and the library at the school is expected to empower the youth in the Waterloo community to become more informed about their environment,

Local businesses and the eThekwini municipality came together in order to make the life of the learners in Waterloo Primary easier.

Fraudster caught in Verulam

A Durban hospice remains mum about a possible link an alleged con artist who was caught in Verulam in possession of suspected fake items.

The hospice president was reluctant to comment, however he did mention that they were aware of the matter.

Council urges public to renew their rebates

The eThekwini Municipality has announced that all recipients of pensioner's rebate to renew their rebates for the 2010/2011 financial year.

The municipality said in the statement the annual income and marriage status is not a requirement for the renewal process.

Inkatha Freedom Party slams new toll plaza

The Inkatha Freedom Party criticized the construction of a new toll plaza near the King Shaka International Airport. The IFp said this during the Economic Development ad Tourism budget briefing in the KwaZulu Natal legislature

:The toll plaza at the airport is nearing completion but no one in the provincial government has bothered to formally announce is construction, let alone enlist views of the public regarding its future operation," IFP spokesperson Lionel Mtshali said.

World Cup fever kicks off at Trubel

The FIFA 2010 World Cup competition involving 32 countries is set to kick off in South Africa in 85 days time.

On March 5, the Trubel primary in Tongaat kicked off its awareness campaign at the school.

A special assembly was held to highlight and map the way forward in order to celebrate 2010 World Cup.

Redcliffe residents see the light

Redcliffe residents can now breathe easy, knowing their electricity shortage problems will be a thing of the past. In a recent meeting between members of the local municipality and the Redcliffe community, it emerged that the main cause for the municipality to delay supplying electricity to the area was due to fact that landowners were reluctant to auction to the land to eThekwini municipality.

"More than 15 people have been electrocuted as a result of loose cables that were illegally connected,"said Justice Mhlongo of eThekwini Electricity Department.

Child watches as mother is hacked to death

According to head of Reaction Unity South Africa, Prem Balram, the man claimed voices woke up him and told him to wake his nephew.

Petrol price to increase

The price of petrol will increase by six cents per litre. With residents still furious over the National Energy Regulator of South Africa's(Nersa)decision to give into Eskom's price hike demands, they will have to content with paying more of petrol.

Pensioner angry over 'Municipal mistake'

A 70 year old pensioner in Tongaat is betting to pay back the money due on his account required by eThekwini municipality. Dhawraj Sithlu applied for a pensioners rate rebate in February last year, and it was approved.

The monthly statements were sent to him informing him that he qualified for a pensioners rate rebate and he should not pay the money due on his account.

Walking i to the Videovision offices, I was feeling rather nervous. It's not everyday and ordinary gal like me gets to Interview the gorgeous Jena Dover(Scandal's Christy) or sit across from Carl Beukes(of Isidingo fame). But being the professional journalist I am, I threatened the butterflies doing 250km/h ain my tummy and walked into the interview room with a brave smile and notebook and pen in hand.

Skills classes for blind

Flats owners irate over unsettled accounts

Tongaat flat owners are furious with the local municipality after they alleged the municipality went back on its word t write off debt owed by the people. It is believed the Council said they would write off the amounts however, residents have been receiving letters saying otherwise.

This emerged at the meeting held at the V Moonsamy Hall, in Buffelsdale on January 24.

Verulam Islamic school otbains 100 percent pass rate

The Verulam Islamic School proved to be amongst the best schools in the province after it obtained incredible results in the final examinations last year.

The staff and the parents were outcome of the examination. The overall subjects passed were, English, Afrikaans, Physics, Geography, Maths, Accounting, Business Economics and 96% in Maths Literacy.

Damage to school property

Learners and teachers at Flambel Primary School in Tongaat have begun their tutorial classes with disruptions after a group of vandals intruded the school and damage to school properties.

The first incident occurred during the festive season and the second just after the school reopened the water tap and sinks were stolen and windows were broker. It is alleged that the suspects entered the school premises through the holes in the fence.

Tongaat man held for shop lifting

A quick response by the members of the community has been praised by the SAPS, leading to the arrest of a man who was looking at Shoprite in Tongaat.

A group of furious taxi commuters and drivers took justice into their own hands at the Tongaat Taxi rank after he threatened the security guard with a knife before the intruded to the store.

Loose electrical cables clain four lives

Loose electricity cables electrocuted four residents at Magwaveni in Tongaat recently.

Three of the victims were residents from Magwaveni and the other from the Imona township. It is alleged that the four may have stepped on the electricity cables.

Amisha unwell, getting a celebrity treatment!

Amisha Patel has been unwell for a while and has been diagnosed with gastro infection. She is getting treated at a suburban hospital by the same doctors who treated Amitabh Bachchan, when he had been admitted there a couple of years ago. Amisha confirmed the news stating that Dr. Barve, who has treated Amitabh and Saif Ali Khan in the past, is treating her.

However, her problem is not very severe and she is now recovering.

Rocket Singh to be screened at Dubai film fest

YashRaj Films' "Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year", slated for Dec 11 release in India, has been selected to be screened at the 6th edition ofthe Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).

The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and helmed by "Chak De! India" director Shimit Amin, will be part of the Indian cinema section in Out of Competition DIFF programme.

Top marks for Verulam Secondary

The Tongaat Economic and Management Sciences Society held its 9th Annual Accounting Challenge recently. More than 150 participants from Tongaaat La Lucia, Verulam Secondary and Wingen Heights in Chatsworth participated.

The Verulam Secondary participated for the first time and obtained 93% pass rate, with Alicia Naidoo securing joint first position in the Grade 10 category.
